Update #2

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 7, 2007, 4:43 AM

To Pixel/Fighter ID people
This project started months before the IDs, so I must say.. it was not intended for the IDs. And even in the changing days, this project is still not SOLELY for the IDs. However if you've noticed I have begun faving the ID.. because they are so wonderful (pardon me, I did not write comments on them.. they are all just too wonderful and your all incredible artists!), this is because part of the whole theme/reason for the project to creating characters like these into a fighting/rpg game. So I eventually do want to get all/most of the characters in!

Screenie!

A semi-old screen shot. As you can see the perspective is somewhat like street fighter. And the characters don't have to be pixel!

Spriters and Animators

We don't need programmers! We are, however going to need people willing to contribute to the project since, this being a community project. This includes the ID artists themselves to make sprite sheets. Aside from that help is abroad on dA! :D

We have a FAQ!

Update #1

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 27, 2007, 1:30 AM
What Happened?!
I (=robphillips) moved to Dubai, and temporarily was without internet.. but that, was just half the story. It seemed that I relied too much on early contributions to the project. Me and a few select people are still working to put out something to grab the public deviant's eye! Stay Tuned!

Since SO much of our project is based off of, and inspired by Street Fighter :

found an AMAZING resource that I think can aid in designing the animations of your character. I am very heavily basing the template off of this resource so It'll help to check it out.

It's a site with a lot of Street Fighter characters moves and actions sprites, as well as backgrounds and more, all resourced right on the site! Check it out!

:bulletgreen:Characters -- CS001
One of the biggest aspects of deviantARCADE is the ability for deviants to submit their own characters. deviants can either create their own character within the game, or submit an original design. The advantage to submitting is that you can roll the entire character into 1 huge package (Original Design, Story and Custom Scenes). If you create your character within the game you'll be restricted to only the sprites you can get in game, but after developing your character you can then submit it as an original design with a story and scene, if you wish.

There is 2 main types of characters. Open and Closed Characters.
:bulletblue:Open Characters

These are characters that are exposed to the world within the arcade. This means they can unlock and gain abilities, weapons and costumes within the game. So they are not restricted to their original design.

:bulletblue:Closed Characters

Consequently, Closed characters ARE restricted to their original design. Once you close a character you may not re-open them to the game's world. The advantage of closing your character is that their unique abilities will be much stronger. However you will not be able to gain more. Another plus is that other deviants will not be able to gain as many abilities from your character after winning a challenge.

:bulletblue:Original Designs

Your character is yours, and is not restricted to the generic animations that is in the game. This means, just because there will be a large amount of sprites within the game, not everyone will have to same animations!
:bulletblue:Multiple Characters

You can submit several original designs if you wish. Let's say your character has a team, or even enemy characters. You can submit the whole catalog. Please understand that we will work to be a large variety of characters into the game. If you do submit more then one design, it may take a bit of time to get the other characters in.

/---/
Once the Character Template is complete, you will be able to see exactly what your character can achieve, and you'll find its quite limitless! Your contribution will be unique to your animations. However, if complications arise with your character, you will be notified.
/---/

:bulletblue:Important guidelines to remember when creating your design:
Be fair with your character!
Just because your jab is quick, doesn't mean it will be your strongest move!
Just the same, try not to create 30 (Try keeping it to about 5) special movies for your character. Although I can't really stop you, but just be fair!
Perspective.
Slightly turned towards the screen. Think Street Fighter!
Height.
The average height of a character is roughly 85 pixels tall.
Uniqueness.
Don't be afraid of being elaborate! This is your Character. Show him or her off!
Things you may ask later.
Yes! Make more then 1 outfit for your character if you want! Make 4 legged creatures! Not all characters HAVE to be humanoids!

:bulletblue:Outfit Ideas
Character Select : This is an outfit that your character will wear when at the main select menu.
Casual : An outfit that maybe will be seen when a user is playing your story.
Battle : Fight gear!
*Note that these are just examples, and just because you make a "Casual Outfit" does not mean you won't be able to use it in battle.*

:bulletblue:Not an animator?
Don't worry. You can sprite most all of your costume, weapons, and anything else. Maybe you can sketch special abilities? If not, when you submit your design, just tell us about them!

:bulletblue:Need help being inspired?
One of the things that I'm excited about seeing (as well as regretting the potential evil I will unleash on deviantART) is seeing anime fanboys out there with their dream characters. So if your feeling uninspired. Watch an anime. Don't worry, they probably stole the design from someone else. :giggle:
Think Street Fighter. Think SNK. Think of anything no one else has thought of!

:bulletgreen:Character Back stories and Lore -- CS002
I'm sure if you really love your character as much as I love mine, you've given it a back story, or perhaps belongs in another universes back story? Maybe a friend wrote a great story, and your character is from that, or MAYBE your character if from a video game or anime series. Point is don't be afraid of giving people a little back story and lore. I know I would want to read about the character that keeps beating me! ..might find a weakness.. :evillaugh:

:bulletblue:What will you do with the stories?
Well, when writing the story/RPG mode for the game, we'll need to place some characters in the beginning of the game that will help low level beginners out. Knowing your character's back story might be able to help us place them better. This is, if you have not created an elaborate story mode for your character!
People will also be able to read the back story right from the game! Another popular idea (also mentioned in submit section), is putting your entire character package in either a deviation, or journal entry. This way when you get your character's ID #, you'll be able to update it on dA and have everything about your character in one place!
Packages = Character, Story, Custom Backgrounds and anything else you think of.

:bulletgreen:Character Custom Background/Backdrop/Theme -- CS003
Yes, you can submit your own Themes for when users challenge you! This can be just a generic background, or very thorough Scene/Theme. When creating the Theme think about similar games I've mentioned and how those scenes are set up. Backgrounds, Foregrounds and even environmental objects!

:bulletgreen:Character Submit/Publication -- CS004
The Submit portion of this project is a bit primitive/underdeveloped.
Until we update with the character template, I ask that people just write stories, or sketch their designs. Don't go crazy creating something yet, because it might not exactly fit the rest of the game.
However if you wish to be the early bird... or eager beaver (ok I'm done) then you can begin to create your package, or just the design. Make a deviation, or Journal dedicated to everything that has to do with your character. When you feel that you have something good going, note us and we'll look it over!

:pointr:Game Stuff:pointl:
:bulletgreen:Story Boards -- GS001
So you've create this AWESOME story line for your character?
Well why not complete it by creating the entire story mode for it?
When deviants enter story mode, they will be able to choose the generic story. Or select and character and play their story.

:bulletblue:What goes into create a story mode?
Well, you'll need to either create your own graphics, or use generic ones.
Graphics range from scene backgrounds, to even dialog. You won't need to program the thing, just design the story and write what happens. Include designs for enemies and even boss fights.
Ideally, you will want the user to meet you somewhere in the story. Weather your the final evil boss, or the hero that help others to the final boss, your character needs to be in the story!

:bulletblue:Why is this? What benefits do I get doing this?
Well you need your character to be in it's own story just because it makes sense. Also because it gives users a change to "Battle" your character, to level up, and add to their "Character Collection".
Probably the BIGGEST benefit to writing a story mode, is that you can make users complete your story, before then even have a chance to challenge you. This helps people get to know your character, as well as provide yet another buffer from spam challenges.

:bulletgreen:Platform Graphics and Layouts -- GS002
Just like Story Mode, you can create your own Platform world to be played. The Platform enviroment will challenge deviants and give out GamePoints for their achievements.

:bulletgreen:Puzzle Layouts -- GS003
Also alike Story Mode. Create Puzzles that deviants can solve to earn points!

:bulletgreen:Enemies (story and non-story specific) -- GS004
Design enemies to be used in either your story, or the generic story mode. Read "Story Boards" for more information. (find : GS001)

:pointr:Other Stuff:pointl:
:bulletgreen:Non-specific Game graphics -- OS001
This can be anything from weapons to menus! Anything you can think of contributing, we're happy to hear about it.

Gameplay (update 0.2)

Sun Apr 29, 2007, 8:19 PM
|Introduction|Gameplay|Contributions|

:bulletgreen:Gameplay:bulletgreen:

In deviantARCADE you can expect to see more than 1 type of game.

**Parts of this article may be unclear if you have not yet read the "Contributions" article.**

:pointr:Types/Genres of games:pointl:
(Links to Wikipedia)
RPG
Platformer
Fighting
Side-Scrolling Shooter

:pointr:Modes of Play:pointl:
Each Genre has certain modes of play.
:bulletgreen:Story : RPG
Experience Story modes of characters while leveling up and unlocking more abilities.
:bulletgreen:Puzzle : Platform and RPG
Earn GamePoints and experience by completing Puzzles.
:bulletgreen:Free Play : Fighting, Side-Scrolling Shooter and RPG
Have fun and let loose killing everything to earn experience and GamePoints.

:pointr:Creating a new Character:pointl:
Aside from submitting your own character you can create one within the game if you wish.
Characters your create within the game are inherently Open. However, at any point you may wish to Close them. Please note that after Closing your character, it may not be re-opened. For this reason you will not be able to Close your character until you are at a certain level.
Character information will be stored on an outside system. It is important to note that the character you create, or submit to the game is yours and yours alone. No one else can use the character in it's entirety.

:pointr:Unlocking new abilities, costumes, weapons and more!:pointl:
Your Open character may unlock new goodies while you play.

:bulletgreen:GamePoints and Character Store
Used to "purchase" general weapons, costumes and abilities from the in game Character Store. Please note that special Character abilities, costumes and weapons can only be unlocked after defeating the respective character.

:bulletgreen:Special Character unlocks
While playing the story mode will meet other characters. These characters are typically created by other deviants. Once you meet a new character you will be able to "Battle" them. Once you defeat the them, you will be aloud to select certain things to unlock from them. Many abilities will require you to fight the character on a high level or perform great in battle.

:pointr:Leveling Up:pointl:
While playing any type of game, you will earn experience points that will go towards leveling up your characters. Leveling up allows you to hold and do more. Also your overall strength increases after leveling up.

:pointr:Ranking Up:pointl:
Ranking up is part of the Community aspect of the game. After you start challenging other deviants, your rank is determined by win/loss ratio, overall level, battle performance and few secret elements.
The formula for determining Rank will NOT be public.

:pointr:Challenging:pointl:
Probably THE most anticipated aspect of this game is challenging other deviants characters and putting them to the test!
How will this work?
Well each character has a certain ID #. This is an ID # that can be openly displayed on your user page. Once you get an ID # from someone, you may be able to challenge them from a game menu. You might not be strong enough to challenge some characters. For this reason you cannot be a level 5 character, and challenge a level 50.
Be careful about spam challenging because if the person your challenging turns you down due to spam, your reputation goes down, and as does your rank. Consequently ignoring or rejecting challenges may decrease your rank as well.

:bulletgreen:The Challenge
After selecting a character to challenge the battle begins.
Your opponent's difficulty is determined by their battle efficiency.
Once you defeat their character the challenge is issued. For this reason to avoid being challenged often, MAKE YOUR CHARACTER STRONG!!
Once the battle is over your job is done. After your opponent accepts the challenge, they then fight your character (difficulty is based on your battle efficiency).
After both battles are over your opponent is the first to see the results.
You are then notified of the results, either a win or a loss, and how many GamePoints or Experience Points you receive.

:bulletgreen:Being Notified
You are notified of the results the same way your opponent is notified of the challenge. Either through a note sent by our bot, or the next time they log into the game. You may also send your own note but be careful not to spam and know that it is not necessary for you to send your own note.
This means you do NOT HAVE to be online to accept a battle. You can play on your own time! This is great because you can fight the characters of deviants that live on the other side of the planet!

:bulletgreen:Battle Efficiency?
This is how difficult you will be against your opponents.
It is determined by how well you play the games, or act in battle. Complied by how many hits you land, or are landed on you, as well as other secret elements.
The formula for determining Battle Efficiency will NOT be public.

:pointr:The future:pointl:
Hopefully in the future we will be able to offer a more streamline battle and co-operation system. Something along the line of a MMO :giggle:
